For too long, our history books have been written from a colonizer lens. It’s time to set the record straight. The people indigenous to Turtle Island are still here and their voices tell us the true history of this land.

Storytelling is the at the core of Indigenous cultures. Stories serve as connection and education. They corroborate experiences and build up communities. Decolonizing fiction belongs at the heart of literature.

Lyrical narratives represent one’s deep inner sentiments. Poetry has ancestral roots and connects generations. “Each poem has ancestors, and maybe even an origin story” - Joy Harjo.

Decolonization means building a library for children which represents the original inhabitants of this nation. It means being intentional in sourcing material on indigeneity.

There is much change and healing needed in our world and our communities. So much has been stripped from this land. Now is the time to resuscitate and rebuild.

Indigenous perspectives are all around us. Let the native voices in your community tell you who they are. Allow yourself to be captivated.
